Review: I See You

I See You I See You by Clare Mackintosh
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

This is my first exposure to the work of Clare Macintosh, but it certainly won’t be the last. I inhaled the book in one evening, racing to the completely unexpected finish. It did, however, have a few less than stellar moments.

The first stumbling block for me was the disconnect that separated the first few chapters. The approach, whilst obviously intentional, was disconcerting and difficult to follow as chapters bounced from plot line to plot line with little to suggest they were in any way related. I had the urge to create a storyboard of characters and plot lines in an effort to keep track as I was reading. Eventually, however, the plots converged, the characters’ lives intertwined and the story became a cat and mouse game that was entertaining and swift.

The second problem I encountered was toward the close, when everyone becomes a suspect. I wasn’t able to find sufficient justifications for the characters and their actions and felt like I was watching a play unfold where suddenly the fourth wall drops and the actors step out of character to address the audience. The fabulous character development Macintosh so cleverly penned seemed then to fall apart in my hands. I was relieved to find that all seemed to return to the personas that had been developed, but that brief slip left me a little wary.

All in all, an enjoyable read that held my attention.
