Review: Nine Perfect Strangers

Nine Perfect Strangers Nine Perfect Strangers by Liane Moriarty
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Nine strangers, one retreat and ten days marry in a story that will hold you to your seat until the final page is turned. There’s a reason Liane Moriarty is a respected and well-read author, and never has it been more evident than in this novel.

The cast of characters represents a wide range of personalities, and each is given just enough of a back story to allow the reader to fully invest. Additionally, readers need not fear having to wade through a single piece of inconsequential detail, as each paragraph, each word, is so carefully chosen that there doesn’t seem to be a syllable that doesn’t in some way further the plot—and what a plot it is!

As a prolific reader, more and more I find myself less than halfway through a book thinking, “been there, done that.” The thought, however, never crossed my mind here (nor does it ever with Moriarity’s work), as the road to the finish was as exhilarating as it was unique. Seriously....LSD, the lottery, football, and an exotic sports car in a novel that also addresses themes of love, loss and family? Only Moriarty could pull off such a feat.

If you’re on the fence about diving in to this one, don’t hesitate for a single second more. Each minute you wait is one in which you are missing out on a delightful read, full of incredible writing, infused with just enough emotion and humor to keep it moving.

Five big gold stars from this cynical reviewer who makes every author work for each one!
